Fragrance awakens feelings that the mind cannot control. The sense of smell is said to be the “gateway to the soul”. No other sensory perception occurs as quickly as smelling and triggers intense experiences. Smell is the most immediate of all the senses. Before you see something, you have usually already smelled and recognized it.

How can scents significantly influence human well-being?


Our nose is incorruptible. What we smell can have a far greater effect on our souls than what we see or hear. Over 70% of our emotions are influenced by our sense of smell.


Our nose picks up tiny scent molecules. They stimulate the approximately 20 million olfactory nerve cells. These convert the scent into an electrical signal and cause an immediate reaction in the brain, as they are directly connected to the innermost control center, the so-called limbic system. The limbic system not only controls our emotional life, it also houses the memory for scents. Depending on the signals it receives, the brain triggers the release of hormones and the stimulation or calming of glands and internal organs. This creates feelings and controls emotions, lowers or raises blood pressure, speeds up or slows down the heartbeat, increases energy or causes tiredness. Whether we like a person - or feel comfortable in our surroundings, feel pleasure or displeasure, motivation and creativity - is largely determined by smell.
